What movie did you watch last?

Yep, simple enough. What movie did you see last? And what did you think of it? The previous thread on the subject has been dead for about a year, so it's time to start fresh.

Try not to answer with just the movie title, but tell everyone your opinion as well. Don't have to be a review or nuttin'. Example:

Dull answer:
Zombie Flesh Eaters III

Better:
Zombie Flesh Eaters III, man it sucked! Not enough ZOMBIES!!

Last seen - Broken (the rubbish Heather Graham film from 2006). Which was, as I said, rubbish. Last thing in the cinema was Be Kind Rewind - watchable enough for a comedy, nothing special, but miles better than the last couple of things I saw before that at the cinema.

Hmm... Lets see... Aha! It was A Knight's Tale. I've been working my way through my DVD collection the last few days to fill the silence in my flat and I hadn't seen it in a while. It's a silly film in its own ways, but I like it. ;)

The Brave One with Jodie Foster and I swear she has become so annoying. It was an alright movie, I think I found it to be a bit shocking more then anything and kinda sad. Would have been better if Jodie Foster wasn't in it though. I reckon anyway.

The AB teacher lent me Some Kind of Wonderful and I watched that the night before last. We'd been watching it in bits as a treat for Sociology, but I wanted to see the whole thing in one sitting. Dang good movie, I'll say. I'm sure I'll be watching it dozens of times down the road and still notice something new to appreciate.

Last watched 'Donnie Darko' this morning, though that was my second time seeing it. Man that movie is just amazing! But the last movie I had seen for the first time was 'Hey hey it's Esther Blueburger', at the cinema yesterday. Not at all what I expected it to be... but it was definitely worth seeing.

My latest:

Cracked open the Bette Davis Box and watched The Letter. Simply gorgeous. It's a mix of film noir and lush, exotic melodrama, sort of like the 30's von Sternberg movies (Morocco, Shanghai Express...). Stunning cinematography, and they get the tropical setting just right.

Repo Man: Intense.

Panic in the Streets: Solid thriller. Loved the New Orleans location, cinematography, and the 'rogues gallery' of great character actors. Jack Palance was deadly cool. Downloaded it free and legally from: http://www.archive.org/details/PanicIntheStreets1950RichardWidmark
(the DivX version looks good)

Solaris (1972) by Andrei Tarkovsky, a work of art. A different science fiction, a different take on alien life.

A love and hate relationship between a man and his wife who commited suicide, and appears mysteriously on the space station he's working on.

BE WARNED: Very long and slow paced at times, but still a must see for good sci-fi fans.

Mandragora
I seem to be stuck in a bad habit of watching extremely depressing (foreign) films about (male) homosexuals.
It's not that they are bad films (some are) but they just leave me feeling all depressed and sad at the end. I mean I kinda had it coming with the other one (I was kinda silly thinking a movie with Nazis would have a happy ending), but somehow I thought this time it wouldn't be this bad. I'm not sure why since everything pointed to a sad sad sad journey. But I was foolish. The city lights blinded me to the depravity and corruption of the underworld.

Oh and I watched Stage Beauty (for about the third time this week) so it wasn't a wholly depressing day.

Just watched Persona for the first time last night. I went on a bit of a Criterion buying binge the last time DeepDiscount.com had their annual Criterion sale and so I have, like, a dozen Bergman films on the shelf I still haven't watched.

I will definitely start on them now, though, because Persona was fantastic. Bibi Andersson and Liv Ullman were incredible, and Sven Nykvist's photography was breathtaking. Highly recommended. Don't be turned off by the arthouse wankery of the first five minutes or so. Once the story gets underway it's an incredibly tense and suspenseful film.

Oh okay, just checking.

I wasn't sure whether that small blurb of a sentence was an actual movie or not since I was too lazy to look it up.

The anime threads aren't that bad. Relatively speaking.

Oh and before this gets too off-topic I watched Shall we Dance? and Solomon and Gaenor recently. The former was a delightful Japanese comedy including salarymen and dancing that led to a Hollywood remake while the latter was a terribly depressing Welsh film I watched because it had Ioan Gruffudd. It was touted as the Welsh Romeo and Juliet but the ending wasn't nearly as dramatic as it was tragic.

Afro Samurai A fantastic animation bringing together Japanese animé and hip-hop music. Fantastic stylised graphics and soundtrack accompany a bloodthirsty tale of revenge as a young boy is orphaned, vowing revenge for his assassinated father. He grows up nurturing an afro of immense proportions, wielding a samurai sword longer than you and a bad-ass attitude to match. Driven by the single vision of becoming the number one samurai and literally cutting down all who stand in his way.
It was lots of fun with original death sequences stacking up along the way.

Dumb & Dumber was on TBS or something this weekend. Ah, so brilliant, but so much is lost when edited for TV.

Tommy Boy was also on TBS. Another classic.

Hancock

Wasn't sure if I wanted to see it at first but I felt adventurous over the 4th of July weekend and checked it out. Not bad for a summer movie and it didn't feel predictable until the ending. It would have been better if there was at least 20 more minutes of character development though. The first half of the movie was the best and that scene when he tosses that kid into the air was classic!

Hellboy

Another fun summer film although it would have been better if some of the story didn't feel a little rushed or some of the humor forced. The best part were the special effects and the unique creatures. Very imaginative!

At the cinema - Wanted. Wretched film. Avoid, if you haven't seen it. Shoot yourself if you have (and liked it).

On DVD - Cloverfield. Very good indeed, even if that chap did hold onto his camera for a little longer than is perhaps plausible, and the end does descend a little into 'we've got to hurry up and kill off the cast, because the film's almost over!!!!'. Highly recommended, though.

Oh, actually that might not have been my mst recent DVD viewing. It could well have been Superbad (which, surprisingly, doesn't live up to its title - or have much to do with its title, for that matter), but I can't remember whether I watched it before or after Cloverfield. Either would make the perfect antidote to the other. More entertaining than I had expected it to be, and the relationship between the two central characters was rather sweet, if a trifle odd.

I just saw The Simpsons Movie on DVD over the weekend and had one of the best laughs in my life! From the menu to the deleted scenes this film had me rolling! The TV show is usually hit or miss for me but the movie version seemed to have taken the humor to the next level (along with the animation).

I agree with you Mr. Booth about Cloverfield. I saw it when it was at the theaters and, despite a few quirks, it's one of the best monster movies I've seen. Peter Jackson's version of King Kong is the only other monster movie that I enjoyed as much. I can't say I was surprised to hear how bad Wanted is. Just seeing the previews (especially the part where the characters make their bullets "curve") gave me the impression that it was going to be one of those exaggerated action flicks (perhaps to the point of "jumping the shark").
If I ever see it, it will be because a friend rented it and I was bored enough to watch it with them (and I mean reeeeeealy bored).

The Dark Knight

I waited 19 years for a Batman movie like Batman Begins and 2 years for this one. I reeeealy hope Chris Nolan does a third one. If you loved the intricate storyline of Memento and the Frank Miller graphic novel of The Dark Knight, you're going to loooooove this movie! And that's no joke....no, really. The last movie I saw was: Shutter.
I thought the movie needed more Jumpy moments. The movie wasn't bad but it could have used a little more things to it.
The setting was good. The movie really isn't scary but I still thought it was a good movie with a twist at the end.

Just watched the new DVD release of Batman: Gotham Knight today. It's Batman done "animatrix" style but with shorter and less stories which bummed me out 'cause it left me wanting more. Regardless the stories were pretty good (especially the last ones) and the various animation styles were nice. I was also pleasantly surprised to hear the same voice actors who voiced Bruce Wayne and Alfred in the old Batman: The Animated Series from the early 90s (it sounded like them anyway).

Watched Terry Gilliam's The Brothers Grimm last night.

I had extremely low expectations going into it, which probably saved the film for me. It was just okay. Nothing special. Certainly not up to 12 Monkeys or Brazil or even Fischer King standards.

Gilliam went waaay overboard with the wide angle lenses. I think I would've been nauseous if I'd seen it in the theater. The writing was lackluster. The French and Italian characterizations were so broad as to be borderline offensive. Matt Damon (Will Grimm) and Peter Stormare (Cavaldi) was seemed to be having tons of fun, though.

It was still somewhat entertaining, but it's hard to recommend.

Indeed. There was A LOT of potential there which is why it feels like such a failure.

On Saturday I watched An American in Paris, starring Gene Kelly and Leslie Caron. I don't really like musicals, but I LOVE An American in Paris. Gene Kelly the kind of personal magnetism on screen that puts even the likes of George Clooney to shame.

The songs are catchy, but the dances are where its at, especially the dialogue-free 15 minute tour de force fantasy sequence at the end. Everything about this sequence, from the music to the costumes to the sets to the choreography is just wonderful. It definitely deserves the 6 Oscars it won, including Best Picture, in 1952.
